In the first part of our article, we covered some of the most significant cyberattacks of the past ten years. Here we continue the analysis with other notable incidents that are still deeply transforming global cybersecurity today.

Colonial Pipeline: when a cyberattack paralyzes the energy supply

In May 2021, the cyberattack on Colonial Pipeline in the United States marked a turning point by underscoring the critical vulnerabilities of energy infrastructure to cyber threats. The ransomware, carried out by the cybercriminal group DarkSide, forced the shutdown of the country's largest pipeline, responsible for supplying 45% of the fuel on the US East Coast.

The attack caused fuel shortages in several states, leading to scenes of panic, long lines at gas stations and a temporary spike in fuel prices. Colonial Pipeline was forced to pay a ransom of about $4.4 million in cryptocurrency to restore its operations quickly, although part of that ransom was later recovered by US authorities.

The attack highlighted the need to strengthen the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure, and pushed the US administration to adopt new, stricter regulations, including obligations to report cyberattacks and regular IT security audits.

The Uber attack: cover-up and legal consequences

In November 2017, Uber publicly disclosed a massive cyberattack, which had occurred a year earlier, that exposed the personal data of more than 57 million drivers and users around the world. The attack was particularly notable not only for its scale, but also for Uber's attempt to cover it up: the company had paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the stolen data and keep the matter secret.

This attempted cover-up set off a major scandal, causing a considerable loss of trust in the company as well as significant legal consequences. Uber faced substantial fines imposed by US and European regulators for violating data protection laws, as well as costly civil lawsuits.

Following the incident, many companies reviewed their internal policies for responding to cybersecurity incidents, placing more emphasis on transparency and rapid reporting protocols, and putting rigorous cyber crisis management procedures in place.

The attack on the Irish health system: a vulnerable medical sector

In May 2021, Ireland suffered a major cyberattack on its national health system (Health Service Executive, HSE). Carried out with the Conti ransomware, the attack paralyzed hospital IT systems for several weeks, causing mass cancellations of medical appointments and non-urgent surgeries, thereby endangering public health.

Unlike Colonial Pipeline, the Irish government refused to pay the ransom, choosing instead to restore the systems slowly using existing backups. This courageous decision, however, led to high recovery costs and significant delays in patient care.

The attack revealed the fragility of health systems in the face of cyber threats, prompting European governments to invest heavily in medical cybersecurity. Since then, many health institutions have strengthened their security protocols, introduced specific training for medical staff, and improved their cyber incident response plans.

The Log4Shell flaw: a vulnerability that shook the internet

In December 2021, a critical vulnerability nicknamed Log4Shell, discovered in the Log4j Java library used worldwide in thousands of applications, set off a global cybersecurity crisis. The flaw allowed hackers to take complete control of affected systems without needing advanced technical skills.

The discovery of Log4Shell triggered an unprecedented mobilization of IT security teams around the world to quickly identify and fix vulnerable systems. Experts estimate that the flaw exposed hundreds of thousands of servers to major intrusion risks, and attacks exploiting the vulnerability continue today.

In response, companies became aware of the importance of permanent, proactive technology monitoring. Managing open-source vulnerabilities became a major strategic priority, leading to a significant increase in investment in automated monitoring tools and in security teams dedicated to vulnerability management.

Strengthening cybersecurity: an undeniable priority

These examples clearly show that cyberattacks can hit every sector with sometimes catastrophic consequences. The growing sophistication of attacks and their increased frequency underline the critical importance of adopting a proactive cybersecurity posture based on prevention, rapid detection and an effective response.

To meet these challenges, companies, government agencies and individuals must continually invest in human skills, innovative technologies, and above all in robust crisis management strategies. Cybersecurity must no longer be seen as an additional cost, but as an essential investment in the longevity and resilience of any organization
